ABOUT US

We’re Beer People

You know that feeling you get when you are talking to somebody from the beer industry about the beer industry and you think to yourself: “I’m glad they know this industry. My neighbor/brother/friend/wife would never understand this conversation.” That is what it is like to work with our people. We have been distributors, suppliers, and retailers who know the idiosyncrasies of this industry. And we know that nobody in this industry uses the word “idiosyncrasies,” so here is its definition: a mode of behavior, language, or thinking process that is particular to an individual or group of individuals. Yep. This industry has idiosyncrasies, and that is important to know when you are working with red, blue, silver, and gold networks from coast to coast.

My first sales job was as a full service gas attendant at Unocal 76. I made commissions on oil, windshield wipers, coolant, batteries, and tires. Because there were 30-40 cars per hour I learned how to change my approach and pitch every time another driver pulled in. I became so convincingly good at sales that I even sold myself a high performance 180 mph speed-rated set of Perelli tires, for my 1980 Pontiac Phoenix. I'm pretty sure that was the only Phoenix in the world with Perelli tires.

My first sales job was at H.A. Lavezzi as a merchandiser trying to break into sales. I overheard a sales rep saying he gave up on a certain bar that was in love with the competition. I asked him if I could take a crack at it, he laughed and said sure. I met with the owner of the bar multiple times over the next few weeks identifying the issues and convincing her that I could deliver and service her account. End result I got the handle, got promoted into sales and started my career as a salesman.

My first sales job was with IBM. I sold mid-size computer systems to the medical industry in Phoenix, AZ. I got almost 9 months of training and I have never been through that much role playing in my life. It served me well throughout my career as they emphasized listening to the needs of the customer and making sure any solution aligned with their goals.

My father managed convenient stores growing up, and he had me doing chores and learning the industry at the age of ten. At 23, I snagged my first sales gig with a large beer distributor in Montgomery, AL where I continued to grown and learn for close to ten years. I’m still learning everyday.

My first sales job was with Life Systems, Inc. where I sold medical devices and supplies to nursing homes, everything from blood pressure monitors to skin care products. I found some nurses resisted change no matter what they were looking at, just fine with what they've been using on residents forever. So, I needed their residents on my side first – quickly became a fan of bingo and the price is right, still not much better today.

My first sales job was at Duke’s Waikiki where I was a cocktail server. Not only did I learn how to provide excellent customer service, but how to encourage guests to order a pupu (appetizer) when they weren’t initially going to or convince them to pick the top shelf island cocktail. I wasn’t always successful, but you don’t win if you don’t try and the worst thing someone could say is no thank you. I learned to always ask the question and to never be afraid someone might say no and of course keep smiling and have fun!
